The Arcane and the Obvious

I chose this theme due to the featured snack food. Um, and the colors and layout.

I mentioned to my friend Michael that it was my favorite snack food of all time, just today, when he complimented me on the theme.

Tonight watching TV we happened on a show called "Good Eats," which happened to be all about popcorn. Mostly stuff I knew, but I like the way the show was put together with cute skits and vignettes and a fair amount of comedy to convey the history of popcorn, a little science about what happens when corn pops, and ways to prepare it maximizing the number of popped kernels.

Right after that show, Rachel Ray was flitting about Chicago on a budget. She ended up at the Navy Pier and made a bee-line to the Popcorn Palace. She mentioned they do mail order and what do you know I pulled them up from a web search. I ordered a catalog.

I figured by now the universe was trying to tell me something, so I popped and ate a big old bowl.

Mmmmm....

I downloaded and burned the ISO for Ubuntu Feisty Fawn today, as soon as I realized that it was available.

Those lovely Ubuntu folks actually had their front page show a list of mirrors hosting the ISO.

I am impressed as hell at how well Ubuntu just works. I'm still a Linux n00b, so it's damned nice that it works so well. The live CD method is awesome. I love booting from CD and seeing exactly what the OS will look and work like. The WiFi drivers and software found the network and connected. And the installer really couldn't be much simpler. Click the Install icon on the desktop and choose how you want to use your HDD. Ding.

My only nits to pick are needing to edit the xorg.conf file to specify 24-bit color and to see the ALPS touch-pad with the mouse preferences.

Other than that, it's super easy to install the applications that I want, know and love&emdash;and want to get to know better. ;)

If you have ever wanted to try Linux, get Ubuntu. Just do it.
